Fic: Everything She Is

Written for the ar_drabbles challenge 'faith', and special thanks to mmegiry for putting up with me whining about how rubbish everything I was writing was, and giving me ideas when I needed them!

Title: Everything She Is
Word Count: 300
Rating: K

He doesn’t believe, but he knows the stories. The gods, those invisible capricious entities he's supposed to venerate and worship, who give and take and manipulate life on a whim. He’s never understood the appeal of giving himself up to something so far beyond his comprehension. Until now.

Athena, he thinks, as he sits in front of her and listens to the wisdom of her words, watches her discuss tactics and defence, all to keep their tiny civilisation together.

She's Artemis to him when he sees her spearhead the hunt for earth, standing under the moonlight, the silvery glow dancing over her features.

He recognises Demeter in her when he hears of her anger, her fury and her rage when anyone seeks to harm those she protects and loves.

When her beauty is in his every thought, and the love he never thought to feel again fills the hole in his heart, he remembers Aphrodite, and knows her in the red-headed goddess who walks amongst them.

He didn't believe in Hestia until he walks into his quarters one night and senses her presence, recognises her delicate scent on the air and discovers the home she has created for him, right under his nose.

He holds his consort, his Hera, as he wakes beside her and understands that true marriage needs no words and no paper, that two people can be bound together this tightly without ever needing to acknowledge it.

His goddess is all of them and none of them and mortal as he is. Too mortal for his liking, slipping slowly from his grasp. He's given himself up to her, ready and willing to worship at her feet every day that she will allow it.

He doesn’t believe in the gods, but he believes in her.

*SQUEE!*

I LOVE! No, seriously, I adore this drabble. Not only because I am completely obsessed with mythology in general, but especially Greek mythology, but YES!

So much love for this, and I also think you did a brilliant job of bringing Adama's beliefs from throughout the show into play here - when they were down on Kobol and he corrects her, saying that the gift was from her. In "Faith", at the end, his words to her... *wibbles* This is wonderful.

:D

I love mythology too, and I used to be obsessed with Greek myths when I was a kid. I really wish they'd used more of it on the show! The Colonial religion was so much more fascinating to me than the Cylon one.

I'm really glad you liked it, thank you! :)

Um, dude...your not happy with this? If I'd written this I would be acstatic. I have alot, ALOT of love for this drabble. I love that he sees all the different elements of the different Gods in her. You've done a terrific job with this.

We discussed where I should start in saving some peoples fics the other day, I think I'll start right here. *right click, save*

Heh, well, most of my other drabbles, I dash off in fifteen minutes and forget about. This one took hours, and it still didn't seem to hang together properly, to me, even once I'd finished with it. I dunno.

I'm thrilled you like it, though, and very flattered you want to keep it! :)

two people can be bound together this tightly without ever needing to acknowledge it.

This is so Bill. Like Tigh says, it means less if you say it. It's enough for men like him and like Bill to feels it in their bones.

Exactly! I see people saying that they were annoyed that we never saw Bill tell Laura he loved her, but I think that he screamed it out every time he looked at her or touched her. I don't think either of them actually needed him to say it. And they were married. They never had a ceremony or a piece of paper, but in every way that mattered to them, they were.

Thank you for commenting :)

Oh my goodness, I don't even know where to begin praising this exquisite little piece. Let me just tell you that it was fantastic, and hope that will get the point across.

He’s never understood the appeal of giving himself up to something so far beyond his comprehension. Until now.

Oh, wow. Beautiful, insightful, the whole nine yards.

Well done. I really enjoyed this.

Thank you! Like I said, I was really unsure about this one. I didn't feel like the words hung together as well as they could have done, so I'm very pleased that you liked this so much and felt that it worked! :)

Lovely, just lovely. I adore how you weaved all of these goddesses in to his perception of her. Beautiful piece.

Thank you :)

I wanted to find a way to bring in some of the mythology of the Colonial religion, and I tried about five different ways of doing it before hitting on this one. Really glad you liked it!

Nothing to worry about, this is wonderful!! Lots of great lines, "too mortal for his liking" yes indeed and this one lack mentioned, "He’s never understood the appeal of giving himself up to something so far beyond his comprehension. Until now", just fantastic.

I too love the greek mythology, so it turned my crank!! Great work. It's tough when you read and edit what you've written over and over(I'm doing it right now with mine. LOL!), you have to remember the inital joy of the idea you had and that the reader is feeling that reading it for the first time. This drabble brings the joy!!

Thank you! Really appreciate the comments )

They so should have used more of the mythology on the show. It was so interesting, and I'd have loved to have seen it explored further.

What a wonderful way to explore all the facets of Bill's relationship with Laura! It takes us from the strictly professional to the intensely intimate and is so fitting for Bill, this well read man who would indeed know the stories and for whom it would make much more sense to ascribe the divine qualities to a n all too mortal woman he can actually see embody them.

This is beautiful, insightful work. I love it. Thank you.

Glad you liked it! I think Bill would definitely know a lot about the gods, even if he didn't believe in them at all, and that he would recognise tall of their aspects in Laura, his own goddess :)

From all the images you paint in this fic, I think my favourite is her creating a home right under his nose. I love their domestic arrangements.

I liked that one, I must admit. That his quarters have always been where he lives, but suddenly having Laura living there has turned it into a real home for him.

Thanks for commenting :)

WOW! I love ALL of this!! How clever to use all the deities.

I wasn't going to pull lines because I really do love it all, but...

Brava.

Thank you :)

I've been thinking a lot about the Colonial mythology and the gods and how well they fitted with some of the characters recently, so I was pleased to discover I could make all of the major goddesses work for Laura in some way, or other.

I'm glad you liked it.
