Fic: Crystalline

Written (belatedly) for the ar_drabbles challenge, 'silver'.

Title: Crystalline
Word Count: 300
Rating: K

There were times when New Caprica was beautiful, she thought, walking slowly in the early morning light towards the pump. Just past dawn, and hardly anyone was up yet, but she’d taken to rising early sometimes, just to enjoy the peace and quiet.

It’d snowed again in the night, was still lightly snowing now, and whilst everyone was getting heartily sick of the cold, these silent moments when the whiteness was fresh and bright and hadn’t been trodden into slush could still take her breath away.

The pump was stiff, the icicle hanging from the spout not giving her much hope of moving it herself. Cursing softly, she tried to work it, her suspicions quickly proving correct, and then he was there, warm breath on the back of her neck.

“It’ll break if you keep doing that. We’ll make do with melted snow. It’ll be fine if we fill a couple of buckets now before it gets dirty.”

“Thought you were still in bed, keeping warm.”

“You were longer than usual. Missed you.”

Shaking snow from his hair, he smiled. “You have snowflakes on your eyelashes.”

She went to brush them away, but he stopped her.

“Leave them. Silver’s a good colour on you.”

She hummed in response, and he chuckled. “My snow princess. You look good.” He lifted the bucket, nodding towards a clear patch of snow.

“You want to go up to the cabin site later and see if the lake’s frozen over?” She began gathering armfuls of snow, tipping it into the bucket.

“See if it really is like looking through glass.” He was flushed, snow dotting his tunic, and somehow she felt warmer just being near him, as though the obvious happiness radiating from him was a flame.

There were times when New Caprica was beautiful.

There's not much to it, but I thought it was just nice and quiet and pretty.

Thanks :)

What a lovely, lovely scene. I can feel the cold (and the warmth!).

I love mornings like that, on the odd occasion that we get snow here. Everything is so still and peaceful.

Thank you :)

Oh, the snow! It reminded me of home...

First snow really is beautiful--all white & pristine. On the ground, hanging on trees, dusting clothes, hair & eyelashes... (I loved the eyelashes line.)

And a frozen lake.

What a beautiful little scene you've written. Simply lovely. : )

I love snow and snowscapes. We don't get it often enough here in the UK.

Thank you. Glad you liked it :)

This is a beautifully drawn scene, the details make it so clear and there is warmth to it which contrasts perfectly with chilly setting.

Lovely use of the prompt in what is a thoroughly engaging drabble. Thank you.

Thank you :)

I wanted to write something nature related, so I figured for 'silver' it needed to be either snow and icicles, or stars. And this one showed up in my head. Nice and quiet and gentle.

Oh, I like it. I love the warmth and the intimacy and the reality of the coldness...

And some sappy part of me is sad that Bill thinks silver is a good colour on Laura, since he will never see her hair turn to silver...

Unless we're AU. :)

Hey, I'm ALL about the AU...

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it :)

Very nice and yes a beautiful, quiet scene between them. We didn't get many of them, so this was a sweet read!!

I like quiet little scenes where not much happens, but they're happy. Makes me smile :)

Thank you!

When I think of NC snow I usually think of dirty slush. This is like christmas, it's lovely.

Christmas! I love that Christmas feeling. Now I want to rewrite it with fairy lights.

Thank you :)

This was nice. I like Bill's warmth. I don't think I've ever thought about NC having snow. Another use of the prompt I would have never thought of!

I kind of imagine Bill absolutely adoring these quiet little domestic moments, and just quietly radiating joyfulness about them. And Laura not entirely sure what to make of it, but just kind of accepting it and making the most of him being happy and content and absorbing that happiness from him.

Thank you :)

Aww... the happy times on New Caprica. Beautiful.

And wow, this is such a contrast, since I've only recently been catching up again on reading, with Lars' latest New Caprica fic. :3 :D
Sep. 16th, 2010 01:22 pm (UTC)
Yeah, Lars' new fic is amazing!

I've never written New Caprica angst yet, which is odd, as I write lots of angst. Might have to rectify that sometime.

Thank you :)

I just found this, and had to tell you what a lovely winter's day read this is. I love this glimpse at a peaceful, rustic New Caprica with the promise of a cabin to come!

Aw, thank you honey! I love winter fic, for some reason. That kind of stillness in the air and that overlay of something clean and fresh and cold, for a while, so that you can pretend everything underneath is better than it is. IDK.
